lump o' coal series
Beginning in January 2009 Molly Sturges has initiated a series of coal related
projects
in an effort to bring cultural animation to critical issues related to climate change
and climate
justice work.
Project include:
Seven Lumps of Coal - A new commission from Dance City (UK) and Flex, a UK contemporary
dance company in collaboration with a small mining village in the UK. (Summer 2009)
Lump O'Coal- The Musical
In collaboartion with writer/director Acushla Bastible and writer Adelma Hnasko
A popular musical and social animation project in three parts. Currently in development (spring 2009).
Coal- A Pocket Opera
A small project shaped in partnership with the larger musical. This piece is being developed for
outdoor staging
and a crew of five people. The piece will be performed in everyday locations including
parking lots, homes
and public spaces. A center lit pool of moving image, much like sitting around a fire,
provides the staging area.
Lit by 3-5 projectors on ladders and solar powered, two performers interact
with the center spaces while the
audience of 30-50 is seated around the center circle. Additional musicians
and volunteer performers (who will
attend a workshop for development of material in each community) sit
behind the audience. An intimate performance,
both educational and emotionally moving. Development scheduled for summer 2009.
