Our Time is Now was Turn the Lens’ pilot project. Funded by the New Mexico Department of Higher Education/GEAR UP and produced/directed by Littleglobe (2010 – 2012). This program utilized collaboration and mentorship to create a feature-length documentary film. Our Time Is Now is a coming-of-age documentary following six rural New Mexican teenagers as they strive to finish high school, wrestle with personal challenges, and pursue their dreams. Littleglobe’s approach to the creation of Our Time is Now was collaborative and participatory, with an emphasis on mentorship and community engagement.
Hundreds of students from eight high schools participated in filmmaking and storytelling workshops, screenings, and discussions to help shape Our Time is Now. In addition, a working cut of the film was screened at five schools where students helped locate what was and wasn’t working in the film and to use the film as a prompt to explore the unique challenges and qualities of the New Mexico educational system and how the adult community can better support our students.
Since its initial broadcast run in 2013, the resulting film has been carried throughout the PBS system and broadcast to over 100 million US homes, bringing the stories of NM students to a national audience.
